Standard Chartered announced on October 14 that eligible affluent clients in the UAE would be able to buy and sell Bitcoin and ether through their existing bank accounts.

The bank’s announcement describes a closed-loop service, with custody and settlement managed within its ecosystem. Clients would not need separate wallets to use that offering.

Bank access, with eligibility conditions

Standard Chartered said the service combines its wealth and investment-banking businesses with SC Ventures-backed Zodia Markets. The announcement identifies Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority as the regulator of the solution.

Availability is described for eligible affluent clients. It is not an announcement of unrestricted access for every customer or every country.

Custody remains an important distinction

Compyvila’s reading: buying through a bank and holding assets in a personal wallet involve different control arrangements. Readers should examine the service terms before assuming they can transfer assets to an external address.

For the underlying ownership concepts, read seed phrases versus private keys.
