MSCI has finalized rules making certain non-operating companies ineligible for its Global Investable Market Indexes, creating a new eligibility question for listed crypto treasury businesses.
The October 15 announcement, issued at 20:48 GMT—02:18 IST on October 16—sets implementation for the close of November 30. The final affected-company list is due November 11.
Financial screens, rather than a blanket Bitcoin ban
The methodology starts by assessing substantial operating assets, then applies five financial ratios to companies that fail that first screen. Failing four or more ratios triggers ineligibility, with buffers governing additions and removals.
CoinDesk’s October 16 coverage identifies Strategy and Metaplanet as potentially exposed. Their exclusion has not been confirmed by the final list.
Why the distinction matters
An index change concerns demand for company shares. It is not an instruction to sell the Bitcoin those companies hold. Readers should watch the November review before treating possible removals as settled outcomes.
